Lead will last longer and age more beautifully than any of its synthetically produced substitutes. It is most commonly utilised on a roof with valleys, chimneys, secret gutters, ridges and hips, abutments and vent pipe flashing. Lead codes determine the weight and thickness of lead sheets. The number in the code equates to the weight in kgs per square foot of lead. When installed correctly, the lead will often outlast the life of the building. It’s only when you scrape lead that you realise how soft and malleable it is.
Milled lead sheet is made by passing through steel rollers. The production process ensures the product is consistent and has a similar thickness throughout the entire length of the roll. It achieves this by passing a lead slab continually through two hydraulic rollers until a specific thickness throughout has been produced. Hence the common name for the product ‘rolled lead’. Laying lead (genuine lead) on roofs is very involved and requires significant experience. Lead is not a product that an inexperienced tiler (with lead) should install. Charles Roofing has had extensive experience working with lead in the UK and Europe.
