Slate roof tiles are capable of resisting acid rain and other chemical corrosion agents. Much of the slate used for roofing purposes was actually formed about 500 million years back. Durability is one of the key factors for the popularity of slate as a roofing material of choice. Laying slate tiles is a more complex process that requires strong experience.
Slate is a more expensive option to concrete or terra cotta, due mainly to the durability of the product and the careful planning required in laying sections of slate roof tiles. Slate is naturally mould resistant, fire-resistant, and has a low water absorption capacity. Because slate tiles are heavy, they are not easily blown off by strong winds.
